Ask an audiologist

How often should I change the wax guard on my hearing aid?

Most hearing aid users should replace their wax guard every 4–8 weeks. This can vary depending on earwax production and daily use. Change your filter if you notice reduced sound quality, lower volume or a blocked receiver – common signs that the wax filter needs changing.

Can I wear my hearing aid without the wax guard?

It is not recommended. Your wax guards help protect the receiver from earwax in the ear canal, moisture and debris. Wearing your hearing aid without a wax filter can increase the risk of blockages and may lead to reduced performance or damage to the receiver.

Can hearing aid wax filters be cleaned?

No. You should not try to clean hearing aid wax filters. They are designed to be replaced rather than cleaned. Attempting to clean a blocked wax guard may damage the filter or reduce its effectiveness. Always replace a filter with a new one when it becomes clogged with earwax or debris.
